Storm Thorgerson is an English graphic designer, known for his work for rock bands like Pink Floyd, 10cc, Led Zeppelin, Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, Muse and The Cranberries.
I categorize my music into genres. I started doing this when I realized I had too many albums and wanted to find a way to classify them effectively, it also seemed handy for playlists. And I don’t mean the kind of genre that comes with the mp3-tag when you download a song. I wanted it to be organized, which required me to start thinking about which artist falls into which category. It took me almost an entire year to go through my library and correctly tag each album. Now, there are about 40 different kinds of them, ranging from Alternative Folk to Noise and from Dark Rock to Dream Pop.
A couple of days ago someone asked me what kind of music I’ve been listening to. I gave her a list. She wrote me back saying that I am too hipster and that my music now sucks.
I laughed it off, but today it got me thinking: What does that even mean?
No really, what the hell do you mean? Do I look for hipster music? Do I only like music if it’s hipster, do I dislike music because it’s not? Most importantly, if someone asks me what I listen to, do I make sure the bands I list are hipster enough?
Do I have to remove all the tags in my library and generalize them under one genre: Hipster?
No.
I listen to the music I listen to because I enjoy it. If I don’t like it, I might try to understand it and give it a few more listens, but I won’t force myself to like something because it’s hyped. Fuck, sometimes I even wait for music to lose hype so I can enjoy it without thinking about everyone else liking it for the sake of “hypeness”. That doesn’t make me indie or a hipster, it makes me want to appreciate something for what it is, without being biased by others.
As for something addressed directly to you, sender of that lovely message: Don’t think that, because you listen to different music, more independent or not, you can allow yourself to sound like a pretentious little shit.
On the same note, I’m really into this song:

This guy was one of the first but most influential speakers of the entire conference. His work is amazing, but it’s the way he shows and talks about it that makes you admire him even more. A genius artist that i will most probably draw a lot of inspiration from in the future.
+ documentary about the exposition for “Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far”.

Integrated 2009 was an event organized by my school, a sort of international conference where a bunch of artists came together to give speeches and display their work.
It was all very impressive and i got introduced to a few graphic designers and illustrators i never heard of before. During the next couple of days i’ll be posting about some of the stuff i saw during the conference.
